Enzo Calzaghe, the father of former world boxing champion Joe, has died aged 69.
The trainer helped Joe become a two-weight world champion in an undefeated 46-fight career as a professional.
Despite having no experience as a trainer before coaching his son, Enzo also led Gavin Rees and Enzo Maccarinelli to world titles.
“The family are devastated to have to announce the death of our beloved Enzo,” the Calzaghes said.
“Joe and all of the Calzaghe family would like to thank the public for their well wishes and kind thoughts, especially the outpouring of support from within the boxing community.
“Enzo led an incredible life both inside and outside of the boxing gym and his loss is a devastating one for the entire Calzaghe family.
“We please ask that people respect our privacy at this difficult time.”
In 2007, Calzaghe won coach of the year award at the BBC Sport awards as well as Ring Magazine trainer of the year.
